What would you be willing to do for $5? As you can imagine, the answers to that question can range from being interesting and useful to being truly bizarre. On the other hand, what would you be willing to pay someone to do for $5? Yes, those answers can be pretty crazy, too. In this economy, it’s not surprising that a lot of people are looking to make money however they can, and even though $5 may not seem like a lot of money, you’ll probably be surprised by the wide variety of things that people will do to get that $5 from you when you take a look at Fiverr.

Anyone can list what they will do for $5 on the site, and a selection of categories will help you to find what you’d like as a buyer. There are some truly fantastic bargains here (along with some crazy but fun stuff), and I know for a fact that you’ll find stuff on the site that you would have never thought of. Fiverr handles the process of ordering the service too, so everything is integrated. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell a service or not, you have to check out the site at the very least.

Faron Young - All-Time Greatest Hits

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Faron Young

The Complete Capitol Hits of Faron Young

The Hee Haw Collection!

Tribute: Grand Ole Opry Stars of the Fifties, Jim Reeves (Volume 3, Classic Country Club Collection)

Grand Ole Opry Stars of the '50s : Vol. 1, Ernest Tubb, Grandpa Jones & Ramona, Marty Robbins, Wilburn Brothers and More [VHS]

The Hee Haw Collection - Episode 3 (George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Faron Young)

Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar

The Hee Haw Collection - Episodes 3 & 13 (George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Faron Young, Merle Haggard)

Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story (Music in American Life)

The Guardians of NeoEgyptia: Book One: "Faron Falls"

Country Song Roundup Vol. 32, No. 254, Sept. 1980 (Ray Stevens, Charley McClain, Kristofferson, Faron Young, Rosanne Cash)

It seems as though everyone in the world is on Twitter now. Sadly, not all of them know how to utilize this fabulous tool to maximize their outreach. The reach you can have by using social media can be staggering. However, you have to know how to use the service correctly to get your message across in a way that people will want to read.

I am by no means an expert on anything. Over the years, though, I’ve learned what works through trial and error — and what doesn’t! I’ve made some amazing connections online, and I’ve soaked up every bit of information that I could from them. After receiving a lot of questions and emails from many of you who are struggling to “master” Twitter, I decided to put together an eBook full of Twitter tips and tricks to help you get started.

To help keep you in the tweet spirit, the eBook contains 140 tips, all written in 140 characters or less. Best of all… it only will cost you $1.40! So why should you shell out a buck and a half of your hard-earned money for yet another eBook? I’ve come up with several reasons, actually!

If you’re new to Twitter, or still unsure how to use it effectively, this eBook will guide you in all of the right directions. Navigating your way through the maze that is Twitter can be daunting. Who should you follow? How do you get followers? What should you say? How do you say it?!

Twitter is a great tool for getting out information about your organization. However, doing so properly is crucial to people taking notice. When you have a startup that you’ve poured your heart, soul and money into, you may not have much of a marketing budget left at the end of the day. Why not make use of social media to get that word spreading like wildfire?

Your customers are on Twitter, and they’re talking about you. Do you know how to best take advantage of that? I have one word for you here: ComcastCares. Frank and his team are listening, and they’re using what you are saying on Twitter to help make your experience better. Isn’t that the kind of service you want to provide?

Are you launching a new product or service? What are people going to think about it? Use Twitter to effectively gauge consumer reaction, and to promote what you have to sell.

If you have something important to tell the World, using Twitter can be one of your best friends. Just take a look at what people such as Drew Olanoff and Mark Horvath have done. Our guide can help you communicate with the rest of the World effectively via Twitter.

Do you not have as many followers as you would like? Let our tips help you to become someone that everyone will want to follow! Your name doesn’t have to be Ashton Kutcher in order to get a zillion followers, honestly!

Are you shy? Using social media services such as Twitter can help you to break out of your shell, 140 characters at a time. The tips we’ve gathered together in this eBook can help you get started, and will provide you with a lot of insight as to how it all works.

When looking for a career change, networking with others is the name of the game. Even if you’re happy in your current position, it doesn’t hurt to learn how to network to your possible future benefit on Twitter.

Posting about your breakfast or your trip to the restroom doesn’t make for interesting reading… so what DOES? Do you even have a clue as to what people want to read? Think for a moment about what you enjoy learning from others on Twitter. Now take a look at your own tweet stream — and our tips — and figure out if you’re saying something worthwhile.

Everyone who is ANYONE is on Twitter, including me! Isn’t that reason enough for you to be there, as well?

Many of the tips in this eBook were submitted by people just like you, from right here in our community. I’ve given credit where credit is due in the guide, and would like to thank them again here. If you have ideas for tips or tricks we forgot to include, go ahead and email them to me! They may just be included in a future revision. Be sure to give me your Twitter account along with your submission, so that I can credit what you write back to you.

Twitter the Tit [VHS]

The Social Media Marketing Book

The Celebrity Tweet Directory

Twitter Marketing: An Hour a Day

Q: Are the cellular based Internet services good enough for me to consider getting rid of my home Internet connection yet? – Sully

A: You may have noticed that a lot of advertising and online discussions are starting to pop-up about the upcoming ‘4G’ service from the cellular companies and how much better they will be than the current ‘3G.’

3G & 4G are marketing terms used by many companies (including Apple for its iPhone as well as cellular and WiMAX providers) and it’s causing some confusion.

In the cellular network world, 4G is a reference to the ‘4th Generation’ of cellular technology.

The first generation was simply the ability to make calls; the second generation introduced some basic data capabilities (mainly text messaging); the third generation (and the current standard) introduced high-speed data transmission for capabilities beyond voice & text (like audio & video); the coming forth generation is designed to increase the speed to make tasks like streaming video much better.

The general consensus on the speed difference of 4G over 3G is that it will be 3 to 5 times faster in average and peak download speeds, but we will only see limited access to these networks in 2010.

Whether it makes sense for you to ‘cut the cord’ or not has a lot to do with your needs and uses.

At the current time, the cost vs. performance of cellular-based Internet services is a little out of line in that you get a lot more speed and data capability with a traditional broadband connection for less than you do with cellular data networks.

If you don’t do much more than surf the Web and check email, you may find that the (currently) slower speed of cellular Internet offerings are adequate, but be careful of the pricing structures.

Traditional home-based high-speed Internet services are an ‘all you can eat’ type of offering, whereas some cellular data plans (especially data only plans) have limitations on the amount of information that you can download before being charged extra fees.

If you are going to compare, make sure you are comparing unlimited cellular data plans, even if you don’t think you will need it. Content and media on the Internet is increasing at a blinding speed and you could easily increase your data consumption without realizing it on a pay-as-you-go plan.

From a performance standpoint; if you are a hardcore gamer that likes to play against others on the Internet or if you download large videos, lots of music or other content that tends to take a lot of bandwidth, you should probably stick with a traditional residential broadband service.

If having access to the Internet no matter where you are is important, that’s the biggest selling point of the cellular based Internet services. Of course, these services only work if you are within range of a data cell tower.

Another issue to consider is the impact of lots of users on a cellular data network. While I was attending this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, my cellular data service was almost unusable (there were a huge number of iPhone users all jamming the network at the same time).

If you live in a high-density urban area, you are more likely to run into network overload issues than those that live in suburban or rural areas.

Although, there are solutions available for sharing cellular Internet connections (most companies are referring to it as MyFi or personal hotspots), if you have multiple users in your household, you are definitely better off with a traditional high-speed Internet connection shared through a router for the time being.

4G is getting a lot of hype as the first legitimate alternative to those that want to ‘cut the cord’ but it’s going to be a while before the various providers build out their 4G networks. That means that early adopters will only get 4G speeds in limited areas so make sure you see a coverage map before you take the plunge!

Ken Colburn
Data Doctors Computer Services
Data Doctors Data Recovery Labs
Data Doctors Franchise Systems, Inc.
Weekly video tech contributor to CNN.com
Host of the award-winning “Computer Corner” radio show

On Wednesday, Twitter enabled location based tweets. This allows you to broadcast your location to Twitter, in some cases zeroing in on your neighborhood and house!

What was Twitter thinking? Did they NOT consider the thousands of teens who use their service every minute (in some cases teens are the largest users). As it stands, complete strangers can now find your location if you opt-in to this feature. The problem with this, even for it being opt-in, is that many teens (and adults), simply click ok (or in this case, “Turn location on”) to get rid of pop up boxes quickly, not realizing that they are now mapping their location. I think Twitter should have enabled a couple more steps to ensure that people knew what they were getting themselves into.

Do you use Facebook?

Today the airwaves and newspapers are being bombarded with news of Toyota’s taking off at a high rate speed and drivers crashing their cars causing injuries and death. But Toyota’s problem are hardly anything new for the auto industry. We tend to forget other cars that were deemed hazardous have also had a large number of injuries and deaths due to faulty designs.

One needs to recall the 1991 to 2001 Ford Explorers. The vehicle were extremely top heavy and had a tendency to roll over. Coupled with the Firestone tires that had a problem of separating, the Explorer-Firestone combination took the lives of over 200 people. During the cash for clunkers program, 6 out of 10 vehicle turned in were Ford Explorers.

How about the Ford ‘flame thrower’ aka the Ford Pinto. This little gem in the 1971 to 1976 model years had a nasty tendency to explode when rear ended. It seems that the fuel tank placed behind the rear axle, the filler neck would have a tendency to rupture in a collision. Some 60 people were fried to death before the problem was fixed.

GM had their day with their GM ‘X’ cars produced from 1980 to 1982. These models included the Buick Skylark, Chevrolet Citation, Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix. These cars suffered from a variety of faulty design errors which included faulty fuel lines, a steering gear that would detached from its mount and front coil suspension problems. Some said that these cars spent more time in the shop than on the road. This began the public impression that GM was building shoddy cars.

So you think that Toyota was the first car with floor mats that pinned the gas pedal wide open? Nope. That honor goes to the 1982 to 1987 Audi 5000. Seems that the Audi 5000 sealed the car makers fate for some 10 years until the public forgot about the problem.

The 1976-1977 Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare hold the honor of the recall champions. The vehicles were recalled in 1977 eight times for various problems. These cars claim to fame were that they had more screw ups than any other models during the 70’s and beyond.

The Corvair. No explanation is necessary. LOL

I am not making excuses for Toyota. I am just pointing out that other car companies have also had issues in the past that caused severe injuries and deaths.

Comments welcome.

Source.

I received an articles from a friend of mine about how Pacific Gas and Electric aka PG&E continues to gouge the people of California. Apparently the latest is that PG&E suffered a 10% decline in profits which fell from $1.2 billion last year as opposed to $1.34 billion in 2008. The article also mentioned that the CEO of PG&E received a compensation package of $9.8 million even when profits declined. The company is now asking for a huge rate increase that will line their pockets with another $1.01 billion if passed. The company is planning to spend some $35 million to get the voters in California to pass a bill that would try to stop any future competition.

Eight years ago the voters of California threw out Governor Gray Davis and his cronies because of the irresponsible way they entered into contracts with electric suppliers and also because the state faced a $5 billion dollar budget deficit. The people voted Governor Schwarzenegger into office which resulted in a lucrative deal for PG&E, the end of deregulation, higher utility rates and now a $20 billion dollar deficit. What an approvement! LOL

We can argue that the Republicans or Democrats are to blame for our current economic situation. But the truth is that the blame falls upon all of our shoulders. Out government no longer represents the people an instead represent the large corporations and special interest groups that line our politicians pockets with money. Greed has infiltrated our entire government. Greed has infiltrated all of corporate America. Is there anyone who can deny this has happened? Our system has slowly decayed to a point where our confidence in either the Republican or Democratic party has eroded and we can no longer trust either party.

What is disturbing about what is happening in California, is that this cancer can spread to other states as well. Is your state next for being gouged by your electric or natural gas company?

Comments welcome.

Source.

The most attacked software seems to be from the company called Adobe. The problem is the extensions to the capabilities of the first versions of the Reader have made it a target on many fronts. Again we are reminded that other than Internet Exploder and its many updates, the patches we apply, or code we fully replace is from Adobe, either the (PDF) Reader or the Flash player.

It has become a routine for many, and those that it has not are being targetted for problems.

ComputerWorld shows that security firm F-Secure, and Microsoft, are ganging up on Adobe, and possibly pushing more users to abandon the software for better secured, or simply less attacked, workalikes.

Hackers adore Adobe Reader, and have pushed it into first place as the software most often exploited in targeted attacks, a Finnish security company said today.

Helsinki-based F-Secure also urged users to update to the newest version of Reader to protect themselves against new attacks taking advantage of a vulnerability patched just three weeks ago.

According to F-Secure, 61% of the nearly 900 targeted attacks it’s tracked in the first two months of 2010 exploited a vulnerability in Reader, Adobe’s popular PDF viewer. By comparison, Microsoft’s Word was exploited in just 24% of the attacks, and bugs in its Excel spreadsheet and PowerPoint presentation maker were leveraged only a combined 14% of the time.

Reader’s slice of the targeted attack "market" climbed from 29% in 2008 to almost 50% last year, but at its pace so far this year, exploits aimed at Adobe’s software are on track to account for nearly two out of every three attacks.

Microsoft’s portion of targeted attack exploits, meanwhile, has steadily declined. Last year, for example, Word, Excel and PowerPoint exploits accounted for approximately 51% of attacks aimed at specific individuals or organizations. In 2008, exploits of those three Microsoft Office applications made up 71% of all targeted attacks.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint accounted for only 39% of all attacks so far this year, F-Secure said.

Targeted attacks can be disastrous to victimized companies and organizations. Google, for instance, was one of scores of Western corporations hit late last year and early this year by targeted attacks thought to originate from China. In Google’s case, the attacks, which exploited a then-unpatched bug in Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), made off with company secrets. Intel was also attacked in January, but the chip maker has denied any connection between what hit its network and the Google-China attacks.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said that hackers stole more than $120 million in just three months from small businesses’ banking accounts, in some cases using malware carried by targeted attacks.

Adobe said it wasn’t surprised at F-Secure’s data. "Given the relative ubiquity and cross-platform reach of many of our products, Adobe has attracted — and will likely continue to attract — increasing attention from attackers," said spokeswoman Wiebke Lips in an e-mail.

She also urged users to update to the newest versions of Reader and other Adobe products. "The majority of attacks we are seeing are exploiting software installations that are not up-to-date on the latest security updates," she said.

F-Secure and Microsoft echoed Lips’ recommendation, as both have discovered in-the-wild attacks exploiting a vulnerability Adobe patched less than a month ago.

On Feb. 16, Adobe issued an emergency update for Reader and Acrobat to patch a pair of flaws, including one tagged as CVE-2010-0188 in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database. Microsoft reported that bug to Adobe via its Microsoft Vulnerability Research Program (MSVR), where the company’s security researchers submit flaws they find in third-party software to the programs’ makers.

F-Secure’s claim that Reader leads the exploit pack isn’t the first time that a security company has awarded Adobe dubious honors. Last month, ScanSafe of San Bruno, Calif. said that malicious PDF files comprised 80% of all exploits at the end of last year.

The most up-to-date editions of Adobe Reader, 9.3.1 and 8.2.1, can be downloaded using links on Adobe’s security site.

Good news for Microsoft, bad news for Adobe. It would be really nice, in all of my reading, to see what work-alike of Acrobat Reader was the least sensitive to these attacks, but none of the comparisons i have seen do that comparison. In this day of heavy applications, and fast processors, who cares if Foxit is a bit faster to start, or fits better on a thumbdrive (with thumbdrives in the GB range, a few megabytes is no big deal). The ubiquity of PDF files means that something will be needed, but a secure something would be just the ticket.

Perhaps a file check similar to what Word files have would be in order. It would add some baggage to the Reader, but so what? It would also be interesting to see if anything was happening on other platforms. If nothing is problematic on Linux/Unix/OS X, then the file check only needs to be in the Windows version of Reader.

§

Technorati Tags: hacker targets,Microsoft products down,Adobe a favorite, updates now available,F-Secure identifies Adobe as prime target,MSVR,CVE,Foxit, built in file check

•
There is always someone out there that is trying to mess things up.

It’s something that no self-respecting person would ever think of as being an issue, yet as it turns out more people than I had expected likely fall into some of the categories listed in this article. Some of the stickier issues, and often easy to overlook, are laws surrounding the access to wireless networks (among a few others). Anyone thinking they are okay might want to ask themselves this question: Did you back up that DVD you own? You might be violating one of these legal issues. Perhaps you checked your email really quick on the nearest open Wi-Fi access point? Again, it’s easy to overlook, but there is a good chance that you are breaking some local statute or worse.

Other legal factors featured in the above linked article are pretty obvious. Don’t do anything sleazy, don’t steal, and don’t profit off of other people’s protected work. Seems fairly simple to me. But because illegal acts can also take place due to malware being used to exploit the PCs of others, etc., clearly it is a good idea to be darn sure you are using both an up to date anti-virus and a good firewall… just to be sure.

Here’s the lesson to take away. When in doubt about something, check. If your friend offers to install software you did not pay for, be wary if it’s proprietary and the license is unknown. Stay away from P2P networks and most of all… be careful when mooching Wi-Fi. This alone is still a dangerous gray area that can lead to criminal wiretap law issues if you are not careful. Use your heads out there; let common sense be your guide.

Hacking Wireless Networks For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies

Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies

Man, this is something that I have to deal with every few years as my notebooks do, indeed, need that ever-loving hardware refresh from time to time. For most people, notebooks seem to come down to weight, display size, battery life, keyboard layout, product reviews, general specs and, of course, price. In the past, I was one of these people. I needed my notebook to have a certain level of power to it… especially when connecting it to my TV to watch Hulu.

But this time around, perhaps for the first time, I am thinking I may very well end up going for a netbook instead. Why? Besides being a lot cheaper with my money than I used to be, there are a few other factors that have me thinking along these lines.

No notebook will every replace my dual-monitor desktop. Sorry, but it’s not happening. So do I really need a desktop replacement for simple Web work? No, I don’t.

If I drop it, I am not screwed. Nothing says ‘crap’ like dropping a $1000+ notebook. Sure, it might survive… but I’d feel a lot better about having a sub-$400 netbook crapping out on me, personally.

Speed — how much do I really need? For the OS and apps that I run on a notebook, I have found that I really don’t need the power of an Intel Dual-Core CPU as I might have once thought. As it turns out, with the exception of Hulu, most Netbook CPUs do the job just fine. Yes, even Flash does okay for me.

So there you have it. Clearly the smart money is keeping my existing notebook… with its dual-core power. But I am also giving serious consideration to a cheap netbook with crazy battery life next time I need to head out of the house. For the money spent, you really can’t go wrong.

2.4GHz Digital Wireless Security Camera System Plugs Into your Computer or Laptop Includes 2 Complete Wireless Cameras (100% Wi-Fi Interference Free)

ASUS Eee PC For Dummies

ARABIC RUSSIAN CYRILLIC ENGLISH NETBOOK ON BLACK BACKGROUND NON-TRANSPARENT KEYBOARD STICKERS

ITALIAN NON-TRANSPARENT KEYBOARD STICKERS ON BLACK BACKGROUND FOR NETBOOK

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch White Netbook - Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N-PU17-BK 12.1-Inch Black Netbook - 5 Hours of Battery Life

ASUS Oxygen 10-Inch Netbook Carying Bag - PARENT

rooCASE ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook Neoprene Sleeve SlipCase (Invisible Zipper Dual-Pocket - Black)

Built NY Pattern Laptop Sleeve 7-10"

Super Slim External IEEE 802.11b/g/n,150Mbps,USB 2.0 Wifi Wireless LAN Adapter

External IEEE 802.11b/g,54Mbps,USB 2.0 Wifi Wireless LAN Adapter

External IEEE 802.11b/g,54Mbps,USB 2.0 Wifi Wireless LAN Adapter

As the popularity of Twitter increases, it also is receiving increased attention from hackers involved with malware and phishing. Twitter is recognizing that protecting their users is a priority. It safeguards their reputation:

“Twitter is finally being proactive about the large number of phishing scams that have plagued the micro-blogging service in the past year. On Wednesday, Twitter introduced its own anti-phishing service designed to protect its users from these types of attacks. The new security measures will focus on Twitter direct messages (DMs) — private tweets addressed to a specific user — and corresponding e-mail notifications…”

link: Twitter Becomes More Proactive About Phishing

additional link: Twitter Fights Phishing, Malware with Link Scanning Service

It is also a reminder to have your security programs updates to the latest definitions. In fact, according to a group of researchers from Germany, the light coming from the lamps in your home could one day encode a wireless broadband signal.

“The advantage is that you’d be using light that is already there,” says Jelena Vuc(ic’ of the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Germany. Vuc(ic’ and her colleagues have found a way to get the most from this synergy of illumination and information and will be presenting their findings during the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), which will take place March 21-25 in San Diego.

As of now, the majority of wireless in homes and businesses is achieved through a radio-frequency Wi-Fi connection. But Wi-Fi has limited bandwidth, and it’s unclear where to find more in the already-crowded radio spectrum. By contrast, visible-frequency wireless has all the bandwidth one could want. The signal would be generated in a room by slightly flickering all the lights in unison. No one would be bothered by this because the rate of modulation would be millions of times faster than a human eye can see. Since visible light can’t go through walls like radio, there would be no unwanted interference from stray signals and less worry of outside hackers.

Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs can’t flicker fast enough, so all the lights would have to be LEDs. Although commercial LEDs have a limited bandwidth of only a few MHz, Vuc(ic’ and her colleagues were able to increase this bandwidth ten-fold by filtering out all but the blue part of the LED spectrum. With the visible wireless system built in their lab, they downloaded data at a rate of 100 Mbit/s. They have now upgraded the system’s receivers and are getting 230 Mbit/s, which is a record for visible wireless using commercial LEDs. Although state-of-the-art radio wireless can achieve comparable speeds, Vuc(ic’ says they should be able to double their data rate again by employing a more sophisticated modulation signal.

Angela Stark @ Optical Society of America

[Photo above by Brian Tobin / CC BY-ND 2.0]

HP Mini 1000 Mobile Broadband 10.2-Inch Netbook Carrying Bag Case with Shoulder Strap and Handles - Black

HP Mini 1000 Mobile Broadband Executive Leather Case and Universal Car Charger

HP Mini 1000 Mobile Broadband 8.9-Inch Reversible Neorpene Sleeve Case with Universal Wall Charger

Buffalo Technology Nfiniti Wireless-N Ultra Compact Client USB 2.0 Adapter WLI-UC-GN

TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G Broadband Router TEW-432BRP (Blue)

TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G USB Adapter TEW-424UB

The Book of Wireless: A Painless Guide to Wi-Fi and Broadband Wireless

Reconfiguring public Internet access in Austin, TX: Wi-Fi's promise and broadband divides [An article from: Government Information Quarterly]

Bruegger's Enterprises leverages MegaPath for broadband access and Wi-Fi service for more than 250 locations nationwide.(BUSINESS): An article from: Wi-Fi Wireless LAN

Option GlobeSurfer III GSM/HSPA Router - Voice, Broadband Data, and Wi-Fi - White

500mW Long Distance Indoor and Outdoor WLAN Wireless USB Wi-Fi Adapter With Hi-Gain 12dBi Patch Panel Antenna - Improving 10X Signal Reception and Distance

2Wire Home Portal 1000HG USB/Ethernet External DSL Modem with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi

Seems like every time you turn around the cable companies are increasing their rates and giving you less.

Fresh off a suite of price hikes last fall that included an increase in the cable modem rental fee from $3 to $5 a month, Comcast is notifying customers they’re raising prices again starting April 1. Many Comcast users are being sent these letters informing them that there’s several new rate hikes for broadband and TV services starting April 1, including a hike in the cost of several of Comcast’s lower-priced broadband tiers by $2 a month. Several TV packages are also seeing hikes including Comcast’s Standard ($61.45 to $63.45) and Expanded (from $48.55 to $50.55) services.

But the truth is, you can cut your cable bill by dropping some packages and possibly your entire cable TV service by replacing it with one or a couple of the following devices which hook up to your TV and give you access to a better selection of programing at lower costs. All these devices support instant viewing or nearly instant viewing of Movies and TV Shows on demand with eye-popping HD quality of up to 1080p. Between them and free services such as Hulu (and other network sites) you’ll still have access to virtually every TV show you watch and many more movies long before they appear on Cable TV.

The least expensive solution (under $130) is the Roku HD-XR Player which offers access to Amazon Video On Demand, NetFlix Instant Viewing of TV Shows and Movies (low cost subscription required), and Pandora over a wireless 802.11b/g/n or wired network connection.

If you’re a fan of iTunes, you’re already familiar with the wide selection of TV shows and movies available through it. For under $230 the Apple TV with 160GB Hard Drive – MB189LL/A offers complete access to your iTunes library over wireless 802.11b/g/n or wired network connections.

The brand-new LG BD570 Network Blu-Ray Disc Player offers access to NetFlix, Roxio CinemaNow, and Vudu. All offer instant streaming of Movies and TV Shows. It can also play movies downloaded to your computer or from a USB drive and it supports a wide array of popular video file formats: DivX/DivX HD, MPEG4 AVC, HP at L4.1, MPEG2, HP@ML, SMPTE VC1, AP@L3, MPEG2, HP@ML, AVCHD, MKV. It also comes with 802.11b/g/n wireless support or can be connected to a wired network.

You can also save by buying a cable modem instead of renting one from the cable company at a monthly rate which may be as high as $10 per month!
